CEGRAD Marks International Day of the Girl Child with the University Primary School

The Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD), University of Cape Coast, has held a special programme for the University Primary School pupils to mark the International Day of the Girl Child 2021. The theme of the event was “My Voice - Our Equal Future” with a sub theme “Digital Generation – Our Generation”.

The International Day of the Girl Child was initiated by United Nations in 2011. This year CEGRAD decided to include it in their list of events to promote the rights of girls and bridging the digital divide. According to Dr. Georgina Yaa OduroOduro, Director of CEGRAD, they decided to introduce the concepts of gender equality to the school children because the schools act as a microcosmos of the society.

Dr. Georgina Yaa Oduro, in her speech stated that the University Basic School serves as a pacesetter and role model in bridging the gender gap not only in digital technology but also in leadership, STEM subjects and sports.

During the event CEGRAD engaged the children in discussions about gender roles and equal opportunities for boys and girls in school and in the society at large.
